Starting Dec. 2016, the Netflix TV interface started showing video previews in the browsing experience. Because of this, users spent less time browsing the catalog and watched more content. 

The Netflix TV app is available on thousands of devices like smart TVs, media boxes, game consoles, and set-top boxes. It's designed to be simple, smart, beautiful, and performant.

This shows a billboard for "13 Reasons Why" at the top of the personalized Netflix experience.  

Netflix is a personalized experience displaying titles in rows which have been algorithmically selected just for you. The titles and rows at the top are selected to be most relevant, and everything from the box art, the metadata, the images, and preview videos are meant to make it easy for you to find something to watch. 

There are still billions of people around the world who aren't Netflix members. We learned that users are interested in a bit more information about Netflix before signing up for their free month, so we found a design which provided that for each of the core value propositions. 

This is the previous design of Netflix.com. It was a very efficient vending machine. We wanted to have a modern design which also performed better for users, meaning the core metrics of streaming and retention had to be better than this successful design. 

Akira is the codename for the new website experience. This is the design that was tested against the previous design to see how well it would perform in an A/B test. 

The website member experience was launched with the new design in June 2015, and it has evolved in many ways since. 

I was the primary driver of the custom font exploration on the product design side. We partnered closely with the brand & marketing design team in Los Angeles as we worked with Dalton Maag on every aspect of the design and naming process.  

We worked through all of the design details: characters, symbols, weights, etc. 

This groundbreaking research car was unveiled to the world at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. Our team designed the digital user experience, inside & out. 

If there's no driver, how does a pedestrian know it's safe to cross the street? The F015 will laser project a virtual crosswalk onto the pavement and say "Please go ahead" so that the pedestrian can walk. 

A simple solution to explicitly communicate with human drivers.  

The digital dashboard is the full width of the dashboard. It will intelligently show the right information at the right time, whether it's driving autonomously or not. 

Users can use gestures to control the dashboard. 

When in full autonomous mode, the front seats can swivel 180°. 

Large touchscreens on each door and a retractable smart table transforms the space from a car to a lounge which can be used for business or pleasure. 

The digital grille isn't just pretty, it communicates to the outside world as well. 

We designed an interactive demo for CES 2014 to show how machine learning can be used in everyday situations. By changing weather conditions, day of the week, time of day, and who's in the car, the car would predict the destination, select a route, pick music, etc. 

The smart Cross Connect app functioned as the car's navigation, entertainment, communication, and guidebook. 

This concept car was shown with a functional digital interface which reflected the vision of modern luxury. It had to be beautiful as well as functional. 

In 2005 we launched the Xbox 360 game console to critical acclaim. It was the first true consumer brand for Microsoft. We aimed to have a consistent and coherent brand experience across the hardware, software, and service, setting a new standard for Microsoft. 

The final design of the four top-level areas: Xbox Live (orange), Games (green), Media (blue), and System (purple). 

By pressing the Xbox 360 button on the controller to invoke it, the Guide was an always-available system interface that enabled access to the gamer profile, friends list, messages, and media. This was another industry first innovation. 

We explored many avenues in order to define the design language of the console itself. 

The final design shows the distinctive inhale shape, the ring of light, and the interplay between inner & outer materials. 

Arguably one of the best game controllers ever, the Xbox 360 wireless controller was a fun exercise in designing hardware/software interactions. It was the first time that wireless controllers can turn a game console on and off, display connectivity state, and respond/invoke system-level interfaces. 

We introduced two new buttons and had to define their names, labels, and orientation of their respective labels on the hardware itself. 

The fifth and final top-level destination, Marketplace, was introduced a year after the console originally launched. 

Three years after the launch of Xbox 360, a new dashboard UI was rolled out. 

In 2010 the Kinect launched, introducing a whole new way of interacting with your game console: gesture & voice.

The final iteration of the Xbox 360 dashboard accommodated Kinect and hinted at the new Metro design language. 

We were specifically located in Pioneer Square, one of the oldest neighborhoods in downtown Seattle, so that we can be physically and psychologically separate from Microsoft headquarters. 

We did a lot of primary and secondary research to better understand potential customers. Ethnographic research documented with video was a tried-and-true method for capturing and communicating our findings. 

We would tell stories to convey the value proposition to users, whether in low-fidelity sketches or high-fidelity videos and prototypes. 

Some of the work we did led directly to shipped products including the Xbox Live experience on Windows Phone. 

A project that was incubated at Pioneer Studios and became a real product is the Xbox One which launched in 2015. 

Unfortunately, most of the work that we did is top secret.
